| The Genus Teratoscincus consists of seven species
namely, T bedriagai, T microlepis, T przewalskii, T scincus scincus, T keyserlingii, T rustomowi and T roborowskii. It is widely distributed from the Caspian sea, Kazakistan, Uzbekisatan into China and Afghanistan to Pakistan. Distribution
Teratoscincus keyserlingii is found in the Nushki desert of Pakistan extending
its range to south east Afghanistan and parts of Iran where it is gradually
replaced by Teratoscinus bedriagai.
Habitat
They inhabit areas of fine sand in the desert and are most active at night (being
nocturnal), males of this species are terretorial and live in holes in the desert
sand of about three foot deep - summer temperatures range from 25 - 30 degrees
centigrade, winter temperatures are much lower.
Breeding & egg laying
In captivity females produce four clutches in a year each clutch consisting
of four eggs, in nature how ever they may lay only twice a year, depending on
the food supply which in turn depends on the annual rain fall, from April-June
and then October-November soon before they go into hybernation after November.
The egg size is about 15 mm in diameter they are soft at first but harden gradually
within an hour. The young hatch in about two half months time with an average
(snout vent) SV length of 53 mm
